Someone stole the "5" from the first elevator on the left in my office building, making it seem as if the elevator would jump from the 44th floor to the 4th and then back up to the 46th. It's more likely that the 5 fell off during cleaning or from excessive bumping--for, what would anyone do with a 5?--than that someone stole it, but the latter case makes for a better story.
A few years ago I was working as a receptionist at a different law firm when the "P" of the LLP after the firm's name went missing from the wall at the entrance. I made the joke in my head that the firm was now a limited liability (which is better than a large-scale liability) but I never shared this attempt at humor with anyone because I didn't have that kind of relationship with anyone on the floor that would allow me to make bad jokes and laugh about them; working at reception kept me isolated from the vast majority of the firm's employees, besides the occasional "hihowareyoutodayi'mgoodthanks." With this joke I would have a bit of a deadpan delivery. That, combined with the the shaggy-dog-sort-of-humor of the joke, would have lead people to think I was stupid or that I just didn't get the point of it.
I can only guess what happened to the "5" and the "P": they probably fell off and got kicked, got sucked up by a vacuum, or were otherwise disposed of. Of course, the scenario that I prefer is that they fell in love and ran off together to have five perfectly plump progeny and lead a bi-coastal lifestyle in Parsippany and Pacific Palisades, where they'd be guaranteed work.
Currently reading: DisneyWar by James B. Stewart (okay, so to say that I'm currently reading it is a bit of a lie: it's in my bag at the moment, but I read the paper on the way to work this morning, so I'll have to wait until tonight's subway ride to start it; however, I am *obsessed* with the Disney Corporation from the late-1970's to the early-1980's and want to work as an in-house counsel there or at Paramount, so I'm really excited to start it!)
Currently listening to: The War soundtrack (one of my all-time favorite soundtracks--half score, half contemporary (1970's) pop folk music)

Hey! I didn't know about you wanting to work in-house counsel at Disney or at Paramount. Would that bring you out this way? ;)
This is sort of a new idea with which I'm toying. I really like the idea of intimately getting to know one company's inner workings (i.e. working in-house rather than for a firm), and I'm obsessed with certain parts of the way the Disney Corporation functions (not so sure I want to take part, but I kind of think I might like to help reform it) and Paramount has just always sounded very majestic and impressive to me. So, yes, I will probably wind up on the West Coast for a while (after law school and after I convince them to give me a job, of course), but I am such an East Coast girl at heart that I'll probably eventually try to work in one of their New York offices or open one in Boston. :) Who knows, though--I could turn out to be a carpenter in two years. We'll see . . .
Although I know you're handy with a hammer, I really don't see you as a carpenter... ;)
Although I know you're handy with a hammer, I really don't see you ending up a carpenter (I mean, unless you *wanted* to)... :)

I know what you mean. It's funny, though: some people were painting the office across from the one that I share two days ago, and *all* I wanted to do was grab a paintbrush and help. I guess I probably wouldn't like these sorts of things as much if they were my job instead of something I could do for fun. :)
